Polaroid Bravo Slides

Graphic Media Design (GMD) offers University faculty and staff Polaroid "instant" 35mm slides for classroom and instructional use. The slides are created on a Polaroid Bravo Slidemaker which operates similar to a copier. The Slidemaker will image 8.5" x 11" or 5" x 7" hardcopies onto 35mm film (no reduction or enlargement). The Slidemaker also has a film developing unit which will process the film between 1 and 4 minutes, depending on the film. Use of the Bravo Slidemaker is on a first-come first-served basis. A GMD representative will assist you in setting-up and operating the Slidemaker and developing unit; you will be responsible for imaging the slides. Advance appointments for use of the Slidemaker are required. Consultation as to page layout, graphics, selection of slide film, and costs, is advisable. All film must be provided by users. The various Polaroid "instant" slide films are described below.

Tips and Guidelines for Setting-up Originals

Since an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper does not have the same proportions as a 35mm slide, the Bravo Slidemaker will not image the entire sheet. As a general rule, you should leave at least an 1.5" border on the 8.5" length and at least 1" on the 11" length. These margins will give you a slight border around the edges of the slide. For 5" x 7" originals, leave a .75" margin around the entire sheet.

Format Templates

General rules and guidelines:

  • Keep slide material and graphics simple.

  • Keep slide orientation and type sizes consistent.

  • Use the largest size font possible; GMD recommends 18 pts. or larger.

  • Choose type styles/fonts that are easy to read; Helvetica or Times Roman are good.

  • Bold typefaces usually produce the best slides.

  • Upper and lower case lettering is easier to read compared to full upper case lettering.

  • Lines/rules should not be less than 2 pts.

  • Use patterns that are course; fine patterns will tend to have a "mottled" look.

  • Illustrations imaged on PolaBlue film will have a tendency to have an "x-ray" appearance.
