Graphic Media Design
(GMD) offers University faculty and staff Polaroid "instant" 35mm
slides for classroom and instructional use. The slides are created on
a Polaroid Bravo Slidemaker which operates similar to a copier. The Slidemaker
will image 8.5" x 11" or 5" x 7" hardcopies onto 35mm film (no reduction
or enlargement). The Slidemaker also has a film developing unit which
will process the film between 1 and 4 minutes, depending on the film.
Use of the Bravo Slidemaker is on a first-come first-served basis. A
GMD representative will assist you in setting-up and operating the Slidemaker
and developing unit; you will be responsible for imaging the slides.
Advance appointments for use of the Slidemaker are required. Consultation
as to page layout, graphics, selection of slide film, and costs, is advisable.
All film must be provided by users. The various Polaroid "instant" slide
films are described below.

PolaBlue white-on-blue film
PolaBlue
film produces high contrast reversed white-on-blue slides. The film produces
a negative image, that is, black text on white paper will produce white text
on a blue background. It is available in 12 exposure rolls and is processed
in 4 minutes. PolaBlue film is ideal for producing title or word slides, and
slides of line illustrations, charts and graphs.
PresentationChrome color film
PolaChrome
film produces color slides. It is available in 12 and 36 exposure rolls and
is processed in 1 to 2 minutes. PolaChrome can be used for copying color photographs,
illustrations and printed material. PolaChrome slides, however, tend to be
slightly darker than traditional slides.
High Contrast PolaChrome color film
High
Contrast PolaChrome film produces high contrast color slides. It is available
in 12 exposure rolls and is processed in 2 minutes. High Contrast PolaChrome
film is best for copying color charts, graphs and high-contrast illustrations,
with good reproduction of colors and clean whites. Originals should not have
pale tints and subtle shades for good reproduction quality.
PolaPan black and white film
PolaPan
film produces black and white slides. It is available in 12 and 36 exposure
rolls and is processed in 1 to 2 minutes. PolaPan should be used to copy original
or printed black and white photographs and other materials containing shades
of gray.
PolaGraph High Contrast black and white film

film produces high contrast black and white slides. It is available is 12 exposure
rolls and is processed in 2 minutes. PolaGraph film is ideal for producing
black and white title slides, illustrations, charts and graphs.

Since an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper does not have the same proportions
as a 35mm slide, the Bravo Slidemaker will not image the entire
sheet. As a general rule, you should leave at least an 1.5" border
on the 8.5" length and at least 1" on the 11" length. These margins
will give you a slight border around the edges of the slide. For
5" x 7" originals, leave a .75" margin around the entire sheet.
General rules and guidelines:
- Keep slide material and graphics simple.
- Keep slide orientation and type sizes consistent.
- Use the largest size font possible;
GMD recommends 18 pts. or larger.
- Choose
type styles/fonts that
are easy to read; Helvetica
or Times Roman are good.
- Bold
typefaces
usually
produce
the
best
slides.
- Upper
and
lower
case
lettering
is
easier
to
read
compared
to
full
upper
case
lettering.
- Lines/rules
should
not
be
less
than
2
pts.
- Use
patterns
that
are
course;
fine
patterns
will
tend
to
have
a "mottled" look.
- Illustrations
imaged
on
PolaBlue
film
will
have
a
tendency
to
have
an "x-ray" appearance.
