The gain in popularity of USB devices such as USB storage drives (i.e. Thumb drives, Jump drives, or Flash drives) and remote presentation devices in recent years has prompted CIS to upgraded the Auxiliary Connection Panels in all General-Use Data Projection Classrooms to include additional inputs and outputs for easier connection of user devices. While individual rooms may vary, auxiliary inputs include RCA inputs, USB ports for PC or MAC installed computers, Ethernet jack for connection of laptops, and in some locations a microphone input and line out for recording audio.

RCA inputs

All general-use classrooms with data projection systems have RCA input jacks for connection of composite video from any source such as VCRs, DVD Players, or Camcorders. In many classrooms, the RCA jacks are located directly on the Switcher/Equipment Selector. In all other locations, RCA jacks are now provided on the Auxiliary Connection Panel and an input labeled"Aux In" on the Switcher/Equipment Selector corresponds to these inputs.

PC/MAC Computer USB Ports

At least two USB ports are provided for each computer (both PC and MAC) permanently installed in general-use classrooms. These ports allow for the connection of all USB devices such as USB storage drives, presentation (Powerpoint) remotes, or mice. Additional USB ports may be available upon request. These ports may be USB 1.1 or 2.0 depending on the installed computer.

PC/MAC Computer Firewire Ports- As Requested

CIS can offer a panel mount Firewire 400 (IEEE1394) connector in some locations. Anyone wishing to have the ability to connect Firewire devices to CIS computers in classrooms is encouraged to voice this need to CIS at cis@hawaii.edu.

Ethernet Connector

An Ethernet connector is provided in all locations for easy connection of laptops or other devices to the World Wide Web. Users must provide their own ethernet cable to connect their laptops to the port provided. A valid UH login and password is required to establish connection and users will be prompted for this information when they open their web browser (Instructions).

XLR Microphone Input and XLR Line Out

The Mic In allows for connection of microphones other than the CIS supplied podium or lavaliere microphone. CIS cautions that having too many microphones on at any time may cause intense feedback and damage to our systems. The Mic In connector supplied is an XLR type and has been configured as a mic level input. The volume level for this input is preset for a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic microphone, the type of mic most commonly used, and therefore we cannot adjust volume levels for other microphones. CIS does not provide wireless microphones but suggests instructors or departments purchase their own, based on their unique needs (i.e. lapel, collar, headset mics, etc). Many of these systems have a pre-amp volume control which will allow you to adjust the volume of the microphone, which is in turn connected to the CIS supplied Mic input. Caution should be taken to purchase models that have a mic level output that can be adapted into an XLR type connector for connection into the auxiliary panel.

A Line Out connection is also provided for recording of audio picked up by the presenter's microphones. Audio from computers or video playback is not included unless inadvertently picked up by the voice microphones. The connector provided is a male XLR type, set at line level. Users wishing to record their events should provide adapters to connect this to their recording devices.
