The University of Hawaii at Manoa has standardized on using the infrared technology as their method of delivering support to the hearing impaired community. Earlier systems were based on transmitting at the 95 / 250 kHz frequency. Unfortunately new energy-efficient flourescent lighting systems, required by the State in all new contruction, interferes with this frequency. The university currently uses a different system transmitting at a higher 2.3 / 2.8 mHz frequency. The receivers for
these two types of systems are not interchangeable. Receivers of various
configurations are available including headsets, body packs with ear
buds, and induction loops for hearing aids with "T" switches.
The Kokua
Program will be able to supply you with the correct type
