Coping with Bomb Threats

Unfortunately faculty and students are having to deal with an increasing number of bomb threats on campus. The evacuation of a building can disrupt class schedule from one to three hours. The Administrations goal is to "proceed with all scheduled examinations and with regular instruction to the fullest extent possible". In order to achieve this goal the following steps should be taken.

  1. On the first day of class make it clear to the students that all lectures will be conducted and exams will be administered even in the event of a bomb threat.

  2. Discuss with your class what steps should be taken if a bomb threat occurs. Together, identify a safe location approximately 100 yards from the perimeter of the building where your class can meet if access to the building is denied.

  3. If you plan to have an exam contact the Communication Coordinator for the building you class is scheduled in as far in advance as possible to arrange for an alternate exam site. Faculty should be prepared to give the following information:

    • name
    • campus address
    • department
    • office phone number
    • course number
    • current room assignment
    • date/time of exam
    • number of students
    • special considerations (ie. handicapped students, etc.)

Within a couple days the Communication Coordinator should be able to assign you an alternate exam location.

  1. Do not reveal the "alternate location" to your class until they have re-assembled at the designated safe area.

  2. Final Exam Week. Communication Coordinators are required to station themselves near the main enterance of the building. The location of alternate exam sites are not disseminated prior to a bomb threat therefore planning is very important. Note, an alternate drop-off point for exam papers should also be considered.
