The Center for Instructional Support is responsible for maintaining the computers installed in general-use classrooms and those installed on the portable data projection carts located in various equipment pools across campus. These computers are capable of supporting the majority of applications faculty require for classroom instruction.

CIS performs computer hardware maintenance and software upgrades several times a year and strives to maintain the highest level of equipment reliability. Problems with any CIS equipment should be reported immediately to CIS for prompt attention.

Quick Facts about Classroom Computers and Software

  • Classroom computers are preloaded with a common set of applications (see below).

  • All computers have a DVD drive that can read either CD or DVD discs.

  • Macintosh computers DO NOT have a built-in 3.5" floppy drive.

  • USB flash drives are frequently being used by faculty to transfer files to the classroom computer. All computers have USB inputs conveniently accessible from an auxiliary panel in the equipment rack or in some cases on the front of the computer itself.

  • Macintosh computers can read PC formatted disks and USB flash drives but the reverse is not true.

  • PowerPoint should be cross-platform compatible.

Policies regarding the use of computers installed in General Use Classrooms:

  • Faculty may load software on classroom computers as long as they have a legal copy to do so.

  • Users should refrain from deleting applications and data other than their own and files should be saved in the "User Files" folder so as to keep the desktop neat and uncluttered.

  • Computer applications, utilities, anti-virus software, etc., are updated between semester breaks. Personal applications and files left on the computer at the end of the semester will be erased, unless CIS is otherwise notified.
